Philadelphia has turned up the volume and stepped into the spotlight as the next major Music City.

On May 29, 2025, Philadelphia’s City Hall hosted a historic ceremony where Philly’s rich musical heritage—from Marian Anderson’s classical triumphs to The Roots’ revolutionary beats—are finally recognized on par with Nashville and Austin. A bill was introduced by Philadelphia Councilman Isaiah Thomas to officially declare Philadelphia as The Original Music City and the resolution was unanimously adopted by all of City Council.

Despite being the birthplace of legends  of groundbreaking music from the Sound of Philadelphia -Gamble & Huff,  Will Smith, Patti LaBelle, Sister Sledge, Jill Scott, Boyz II Men, Meek Mill and many more, Philadelphia hasn’t always gotten its due. Now, the city is not only celebrating that legacy but also highlighting the massive economic engine behind it: a $6.1 billion annual output, over 31,000 jobs, and $64 million in tax revenue. All without a dedicated city-backed music office—until now.

Starting in May 2026, “Philadelphia Music Month” will take over the city every year, driving investment in recording studios, live venues, independent artists, and creative businesses. The announcement brings together music legends, city leaders, and cultural icons for a vibrant reaffirmation that Philly’s streets, stages, and studios deserve global recognition.

Philadelphia has long been a birthplace of groundbreaking music—from the Sound of Philadelphia and jazz greats to revolutionary hip-hop, punk, soul, and classical artistry. “The Original Music City” designation from Philadelphia’s city Council will affirm Philadelphia’s role as a national and international leader in arts and culture and support strategic investment in the city’s creative economy.

If you love deep-rooted soul, booming hip-hop, or anything in between, this is our moment. Philadelphia’s musical renaissance is officially here!
