Mariah Carey Hints at 16th Album, Previews New Song

Mariah Carey is gearing up to release new music — and soon. The global superstar took to social media on Monday (June 2) to post a teaser video hinting at her next era.

The clip opens with Carey revving up her sports car with her 2005 hit “It’s Like That” playing in the background. Moments later, Carey skips to the next track, which has the filename T:D_MC16.mp3.

In the snippet, which samples Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President,” Carey whispers over handclaps and percussion, “To show my appreciation for your support.” 

“What’s your type?” Carey wrote in the caption for the video teaser, which can be viewed below.  

Carey’s upcoming single “Type Dangerous,” out June 6, will officially kick off the campaign for her highly anticipated 16th studio album, informally dubbed MC16.

Her next album will follow Caution, ranked No. 1 on Rated R&B’s 25 Best R&B Albums of 2018 list. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart, included the singles “GTFO,” “With You” and “Portrait.” 

Carey released remixes of the latter track in 2024 as part of her Portrait of a Portrait installment of Audible’s Words + Music series.

Regarding her decision to remix the song, she told Variety, “It’s just something that felt so strong to me the way I wrote it, because it was really about the strong feelings that I had. So to go from such a slow, kind of very sad song to this uptempo, upbeat — still sad, because of the lyrical content — but much less sad because we whooped it up. I don’t know, I really, really enjoyed the whole process of making ‘Portrait.’”

In the same interview with the publication, Carey confirmed that she was working on her follow-up to Caution. “I’ve written some new songs,” she said. “I have to figure out which songs I’m going to do and which songs I’m not going to do.”

Carey will be honored with the Ultimate Icon Award at the 2025 BET Awards on Monday, June 9. She, along with Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin and Snoop Dogg, will be recognized for “their decades of groundbreaking contributions to music, entertainment, advocacy, and community impact.”

In other news, Carey has been celebrating the milestone anniversary of her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi. On May 30, she released The Emancipation of Mimi (20th Anniversary Edition), which included the original album plus special remixes, previously unreleased songs and acapellas. 

Further, the Songbird Supreme released Mariah Carey Live: The Mimi Sessions, a 10-minute set featuring selections from The Emancipation of Mimi.
